Patty Melt Sandwich

Ingredients
For the Patties:

1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
4 slices of Swiss or American cheese
For the Onions:

2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon sugar (optional, for caramelization)
For the Sandwich:

8 slices rye bread (or sourdough if preferred)
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for spreading on bread)
Additional cheese slices (optional, for extra cheesiness)
Instructions
Caramelize the Onions:

Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and sugar (if using). Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Prepare the Beef Patties:

In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into thin, oval-shaped patties to match the shape of the bread.
Cook the Patties:

In the same skillet used for the onions, cook the patties over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side or until they reach your desired doneness. Place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt. Remove and set aside.
Assemble the Sandwich:

Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place a slice of cheese on the unbuttered side of 4 slices of bread (optional for extra cheesiness).
Top each with a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of bread (buttered side facing out).
Grill the Sandwich:

Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches on the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.
Serve:

Slice the sandwiches in half and serve immediately with fries, chips, or a dill pickle on the side.
Enjoy this classic diner-style patty melt with gooey cheese, savory onions, and crispy bread!
