Smothered Hamburger Steak
Ingredients:
– 1 pound ground beef
– 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
– 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
– 1 egg
– 1 teaspoon garlic powder
– 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
– Salt and pepper to taste
– 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 1 large onion, sliced
– 1 cup beef broth
– 1 tablespoon soy sauce
– 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
– 1/4 cup water (if using cornstarch)
– Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Patties:
– In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
– Mix until just combined, then form the mixture into 4 equal patties.
2. Cook the Patties:
– Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
– Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
3. Sauté the Onions:
– In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
4. Create the Gravy:
– Pour in the beef broth and soy sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
– If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix the cornstarch with water in a small bowl and add it to the skillet. Stir until the gravy thickens.
5. Combine and Simmer:
– Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them.
– Cover and let simmer for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
6. Serve:
– Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
– Serve the smothered hamburger steaks with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
