Chinese Beef and Onion Stir-Fry
A quick and flavorful dish featuring tender beef and sweet onions in a savory stir-fry sauce. Perfect for a weeknight meal with steamed rice or noodles.
Ingredients
For the Beef Marinade:
1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain 🥩

1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp sesame oil
For the Stir-Fry Sauce:
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp hoisin sauce
1 tbsp rice vinegar
½ tsp sugar
½ cup beef broth or water
For the Stir-Fry:
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 large onion, thinly sliced 🧅
3 cloves garlic, minced 🧄
1-inch piece of ginger, minced
2 green onions, sliced (optional, for garnish) 🌿
Instructions
1. Marinate the Beef:
In a bowl, combine soy sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil.
Add the sliced beef to the marinade and toss to coat evenly. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.
2. Prepare the Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and beef broth. Set aside.
3. Stir-Fry the Beef:
Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.
Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
4. Cook the Onions and Aromatics:
In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil.
Add the sliced onion, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the onions are tender and slightly caramelized.
5. Combine and Cook:
Return the beef to the skillet.
Pour in the stir-fry sauce and mix everything together. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the beef and onions.
6. Serve:
Garnish with sliced green onions if desired.
Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
Tips:
Freeze the beef for 15-20 minutes before slicing to make it easier to cut thinly.
Add vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, or snap peas for extra nutrition and color.
